21.9% polycrystalline photovoltaic cell conversion efficiency refresh record

The Fraunhofer ISE of the German Fraunhofer claims that polysilicon photovoltaic cell efficiency is up to 21.9%. Fraunhofer researchers deploy N-type high-performance polycrystalline technology to produce record-based photovoltaic cells.


Polycrystalline photovoltaic technology continues to move forward in terms of conversion efficiency. FraunhoferISE researchers claimed that the results show that the improvement of polycrystalline materials can improve the energy output, so the efficiency of polycrystalline cells hit a record of 21.9% efficiency.


This refreshed record of the battery deployed Fraunhofer′s TOPCon battery technology. The deployment of passivated backside contact technology, applied to the back surface of the battery and no pattern, can simplify the manufacturing process and improve the energy output.


Previously, Fraunhofer ISE had deployed TOPCon technology on monocrystalline photovoltaic chips, which achieved 25.3% battery efficiency in 2016 double-sided single crystal cells.


In July 2016, Chinese manufacturer Trina Solar announced that its polycrystalline PERC technology achieved 20.16% conversion efficiency. Trina Solar claims that the result is achieved on an industrial-scale production facility.
